Skills in multi-classing

I'm just a bit unsure about how this works, so I'll explain what I think, if someone could correct or confirm that'd be great.

I have a ECL 4 character, 2 ranger and 2 Fighter levels (first level was ranger(. I want to jack up move silently, so that max I can have in it is 6? (4 at start, +1 for second ranger lvl, +1 at the second fighter level since it's cross class)

And then if I took my 5th level as ranger, my max move silent would be 7, as opposed to 8 if I had gone all ranger?

No. Once a skill is a class skill once, it is a class skill (FOR THE PURPOSES OF MAX RANK) forever. Your max rank in any of your ranger or fighter class skills is 8 at ECL 5. You still have to pay cross-class prices if you're leveling in the "wrong" class though.

Basically, there's two questions:

Was this skill ever a class skill for me? If yes, its max rank is character level +3. Otherwise, the max rank is 1/2 (character level +3)
Is this skill currently a class skill for me? If yes, you pay 1:1 to increase ranks in it this level. If no, you pay 2:1 to increase ranks in it this level.
