The intro flava' text.... “Look, right there, under the collar of his shirt. Joey, magnify sector 17-3 by a quarter. You see?” Following the older detective’s pointing Dallas Cowboy’s commemorative pen, every member of the task force strained to see the blur of pixels buried somewhere in sector 17-3. The image projected on the wall screen leapt forward and one of the assembled FBI agents thought maybe, just maybe she saw something hiding in the folds of the bank robber’s suit collar. “A dog collar maybe? What’s that about?” The lead detective shook his head and brought up two other windows on the wall screen, each showing grainy security camera footage of two other bank robberies. A few seconds of work, and the new images were zoomed in to show the obvious: all three robbers were wearing the same dark leather choker around their throats. One of the other detectives leaned forward in his seat, squinting at the badly pixilated image. He tapped the side of his forehead thoughtfully. “Same gang? A cult of some kind?” The lead detective shrugged, still starting at the frozen images. He thought for a moment. “If it is it’s not something I’ve seen before. And according to their families, none of our robbers had any connection with any kind of cult, no gang connections. Fred Reeds, the Arizona robber, he had a bust for pot back in high school, but other than that… no criminal records, no major money problems…..nothing in common” “So the question becomes, why did three random citizens suddenly decide to become bank robbers and multiple murderers? What possessed ‘em?” Are your sins so hideous you know that when you finally die that you’ll burn forever, and you would do anything to cheat God’s judgment? Or do you love life so much, that you’ll become something other than human in order to keep seeing new mornings, watching history unfold as an outsider? Or are the final sensations of death so ecstatic that you’ll do anything to feel them again and again and again? No matter your reasons, you’ve taken one step beyond: you’ve become an Unbound Soul, an immortal being that doesn’t die like other men. The body you were born with isn’t a vital part of you, it is merely a vehicle for your soul, which you can abandon in extremis, for convienience, or in seeking a moment’s pleasure. Your restless, indestructible soul is bound to mortal life with your Psychopomp Cords, arcane ribbons, spiritual containment systems that tie you to this existence, and are the source of your cruel powers.
