Your own group of, say, level 4 characters might be approapriate for CR 5 encounters. Or CR 3. The goal is to be consistent.The goal does indeed break down when mixing and matching with NPCs or monsters with classes. I don't, however, think that makes the whole system flawed.</blockquote>
