I just finished making a Paladin character and though I didn't go with the Cavalier (I don't have the Essentials materials), it does look like a safer bet than a Cleric. The defender ability is very handy, AC is much higher, and though healer is lower, with the right selection of feats Lay On Hands can be quite formidable in its own right. Of particular use is a feat that allows Paladin's to use their own Surge Value for the healing instead of their target's, which is particularly high for a Dragonborn. Good tip!The Paladin build I have access to doesn't have the opportunity attack, which isn't quite as handy. However, he is able to give "Divine Sanction" to groups of targets using either of two Encounter abilities he has--it doesn't have the same preventative oomph, but it does do 7 radiant damage to anyone that ignores the mark, which could shorten fights.You mention halving enemy HP. Is this a common houserule with small parties or one that is common all-around due to this 4th Edition grind I keep hearing about?</blockquote>
