So how tiny is Leomund's Tiny Hut?

The spell description says it's a 20' radius centered on you, making it 40' across if I understand it correctly.

That's not tiny. That's pretty frickin large.

The reason I ask is the DM in my group told me last night that I couldn't cast the spell in a forest because I didn't have an open space large enough to place the hut.

the description in the SRD for Tiny Hut is pretty much self explanatory. you just create a force area. things inside the area will be inside the hut. doesn't mean you create furniture and such. ;) just a place to protect you from the elements pretty much.

I understand that it's a force effect, not a real edifice. What I'm trying to get a handle on is how much control I can exert over the dimensions of the spell as far as it's area of affect.
The DM has ruled that it is basically a 40' circle, which is huge, and doesn't seem to fit the feel of the spell too well. I'd like to challenge that ruling, but I need a little more info.

Half the sphere projects above the ground, and the lower hemisphere passes through the ground.

If it passes through the ground, why wouldn't it pass through trees?
