This is pretty close to my objections with rolliing stats, in practice. However, my experience comes from the other direction. In my experience players regularly have complained about having too low stats. Most don't want to keep low stats. Sure, the current system has a level where you reroll below it. But watch players roll characters that are right above that level and see how many are really willing to play it. Sure, they exist (and there is probably a higher concentration of them on these forums), but there aren't many of them who will do it and feel good about it. Look at the recent threads along the lines of "I rolled these horrible stats, what should I do?" A large percentage of the players here recommended two paths; pressure the DM into allowing a reroll, or play the character and do so in a way to get it killed as soon as possible. To that I say the same as you; "why the heck are you rolling for stats if you won't accept the outcome?" I believe that most players overall are doing it because they are just hoping for a "jackpot." They roll hoping for the roll the original poster here was looking for, 5 18's. Many of those players expect to be able to pressure the DM into allowing them reroll the poor characters, instead of taking the back side of looking for the jackpot. My solution isn't the same as yours. You believe in rolling and keeping what you roll. My experience says that most players don't want to do that. That's what I like about point buy. No "jackpots," but also no loser stat rolls you don't want to play. Even better, with the right group, is just allow the players to choose their own stats. Decided what stat types are appropriate for the game and let them know when they choose their stats. If you aren't going to accept what you roll, or are willing to accept it but want to kill off the character immediately in play, what is the use of rolling?
