NASA is holding a press conference detailing analysis of a rock sample discovered one year ago by Perseverance. Current best explanation seems that the rock features are a result of ancient biological activity.
I think the most important question regarding an ancient Martian life is whether it has the same DNA as Earth life. if so, that essentially proves panspermia. I imagine who seeded who (or if there was a third party) would be long debated.Gotta get those samples back to Earth and study them properly!
I don’t think this discovery is going to yield DNA. It’s potential evidence of life, not organic material.I think the most important question regarding an ancient Martian life is whether it has the same DNA as Earth life. if so, that essentially proves panspermia. I imagine who seeded who (or if there was a third party) would be long debated.
But if Martian life was an entirely different lineage, then we can effectively assume that life is common in the universe, at least on rocky planets in the habital zone.
Gotta get those samples back to Earth and study them properly!
Also? When I saw the title, it made me think of David Bowie. And then remember that he was dead. Which makes me sad. Why do you have to make me sad, @briggart ?
Sigh.
Says the bad guy in almost every scifi horror movie.Gotta get those samples back to Earth and study them properly!
