Its also hard for me to offer anything else because I don't recall being in a situation like this. The current 5e DM we play under I have been playing with since 1994, and I am pretty comfortable just punching him in the throat when we don't agree (I am mostly kidding). I have been told NO before for things I have tried to run (usually something out of Dragon like the AD&D Archer, or 3rd party 3/3.5 stuff from Mongoose publishing), but its never been a big deal.
