Heres my problem with this forum 1, Dungeons and dragons is the GAME IDEA not the 2E, 3E rules those are mechanics and you could even call them the SRD, sound familiar? 2. there is no Better system, each one is unique and different, some pro some con, 2E didnt have rules for everything like 3E does and 3 can be more customized, BUT it is also a LOT more number crunching that can sometimes be too much for a DM to do with a large party (especially in timed tourneys) 3. for you to knock the older rules systes truly shows that you are a new gamer and that you probably started with 3 which is most of the people who say what you say, most gamers dont knock it because its a SET OF RULES! that why they also have optional rules, you use what you want to. 4. As for the numbers, if you really knew your facts you would see that 3 is nowhere near as big as the older books, when they had multiple worlds and hundreds of books, modules, cards etc.. Now they only have the core books which is their main moneymakers, and theyre cheaper. For the most part when it came out at first WOTC depended on other companies to put out worlds and mods and as long as they required the use of their rule books they were happy. 5. 3e, hmmm you think it means 3rd edition you people act like its a entire different game, guess what ITS NOT! all of the basics are there. 6. OK lets face it, the insider info was probably wrong but you know and I know it there will be a 4th edition, maybe not next year but there will be, a business needs to make money. well thats my rant, I just hate people who make dumb comments without the facts. Its simple its the same game just different versions of rules, and to say one is superior, well that just shows you age and how New you are to the game and gamer circle.
