So the sun shrinks to half its size...

The sun god is tied to the sun, that is left far behind, his power is effectively nil. At the same time thousands of other minor 'sun gods' appear, they all combine in one pantheon as the 'star gods'. Altogether they are still weaker than any other god, but have access to all of the domains or something similar.
