So..uh.. are the Inspired a template.. or what?

Hey all

Like the title says, I'm just wondering. I've been looking through all the Eberron content I can find about the Inspired and I get the concept of two spirits in one body (indeed.. it's why I'm looking at them..) but I can only ever find ready made NPC examples, with no real rules on how to construct your own. I mean, I can always extrapolate from the examples.. but that would make CR adjustment tricky (and CR can be tricky enough on its own anyway).

Where am I not looking?

The Inspired are not a template. They are humans that have been bred over many generations to have no defence against the possesion power of the Quori. That is basically it, plus whatever bonuses they get in their stat block. They themselves aren't too threatening at all, but the fact that they are willing hosts for potent psionic fiends from an outer plane and as such the ruling/priest class of a foreign nation with sneaky long term plans of domination...

Although there are rules for possession by otherworldly creatures in the eberron book (p100-102) which might have some interest for you.

And, if you want to create them you want to look at their "monster" entry in the Eberron Campaign Setting under "Inspired as Characters. For their stats when possessed you'll also need to find the entry for one of the quori.

Inspired are a race unto themselves, like Kalashtar. Unlike Kalashtar, they sleep and are completely unable to resist the possession of a particular quori (according to Keith's previous posts, which is likely to be confirmed in Secrets of Sarlona, as he is writing it). Quori take complete control while possessing, and their own personality rewrites that of the Inspired host after prolonged posession, which brings out their class levels at an accelerated pace. This is the reason why the Dreaming Dark (as an organization) is so resiliant: they can tap into their pools of hosts and (relatively) quickly replace lost agents, while the mind controling those agents (the Quori) are not only unharmed, but have learned from their mistakes and will be better equiped to defeat you next time.
