Solo Adventures?

Respectabiggle

First Post
Looking for a good adventure to take a single 1st-level PC through - I need to build her up for integration into a higher-level campaign. Free OGL stuff online would be great, 1E or other systems also fine.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Expeditious Retreat Press has a few, but I think they dictate the PC you control. And with that sentence my ability to answer your question is at an end.

1st level solo is hard. It's very easy to kill off the PC, even dwarf barbarians. I dunno if a wizard would even be able to attempt it. What class is the PC?

Out of curiosity, why not let the PC just start at a higher level so everyone can play together sooner?

Druid is a stronger bet as a 1st level character as they can get a companion to fight side by side with and also self heal between combats. Even still, I think it's hard to find an adventure that you can run safely for a single level 1 character. They will advance quickly without dividing xp, though so maybe you can just make a small encounter or two to at least get them up to level 2.

Have her be accompanied by hirelings, of course. The other players in the group can put aside their regular characters to play the role of the hirelings - it'll give them a chance to try out different characters, and once the 1st-level character is up to par and everyone else has resumed their regular characters, you now have a handful of fully-developed NPC's that you can use later.

I'd create my own dealing specifically with the character type they'll be playing. I've done this before- the paladin had to convince a duke to donate some if his land for a temple to be built, and included lots of diplomacy, a chance to lead a religious service, and command of a small group of guards against a toned down demon.

The rogue had to scout out an old mine, figure out where it was (via gather information), bypassed one pit trap, picked a lock, searched a room, and fought a badger (which unfortunatly did almost kill him!).

Just create something very simple which plays to the characters strengths/skills and allows them to experience the majority of the core parts of the system (attacks, saving throws, skill checks, etc).

My advice is to throw in some NPC allies. Make them friends, family or associates of hers (the PC), not just henchmen. Play up their relationship, maybe even make one of the NPCs the de facto leader. Shortly after the adventure begins, however, you can take out the leader in some dramatic way. Then, perhaps, have the other NPCs look to the PC for leadership from that point on.

You can, throughout the adventure get rid of these NPCs whenever you like, of course, perhaps leaving the PC as the only survivor (giving her good reason for joining your official party). Having these NPCs be more than just hired help, however, will give their deaths (and their lives) more meaning to the PC.

I have something here that will take a 1st-level paladin to 5th level (and to 6th if I can get my act together enough to finish off the 5th adventure). You might need to adapt it if the PC is of another class, though.

ROLFMAO!!!

What a GREAT user name!

Anyhoo ... to answer your question ... i recall some 1e modules that focused on these solo adventures. Blizzard pass? But that was class specific. Castle Caldwell? Maybe.

That's all that comes to mind this very second unfortunately....
