Someone explain EOM to me

I picked it up based on a recommendation that it would contain an improved and modern version of Four Color to Fantasy's super-powers instead of magic items option.

As I'm reading I've yet to see that really work out and the explanation in the Lycian book seems to indicate that Magic Items in RAW and EOM aren't really compatible or equivalent except in the general sense.

Can someone help me see what the original recommendation was based on? Or at least give me a short primer in how to use the magic system to actually produce the permanent spells that the book showcases?

I don't know about the superpower bit, but the Anima class is very similar to FCtF's Hero.

The biggest appeal of EoM is that it's so flexible. It's almost completely flavourless by itself, but depending on how you describe the spells and such, it can be incredibly nice.

Yeah, EoM items are pretty different from core; ALL of them except for the mana batteries are based on actual spells, so you can't really make something like a circlet of persuasion or belt of Dwarvenkind. One of the biggest failings of EoM magic items is that there's no way to make items with drawbacks; however, that should be easily done by figuring the MP cost of the drawbacks and subtracting that money from the item's price.
