But even in that case, if the whole party had been bunched up they might have <em>all</em> died to the chain worm instead of some of them having a chance to act and save him. Really there's not all that much you can do for someone from 5' away that you couldn't do from 55' away, if you take 5E's flexible action economy into account. (Move + Act every round, plus bonus action Expeditious Retreat/Misty Step if necessary.)</p></blockquote><p></p>
