Can a sorc research new spells?
According to the RAW, no. I would allow it to the extent for new spells the sorc will gain next level (ie spells that have a built in Meta affect, Enlarged, Quickened, etc).

If so, what happens to his spells known list?
Nothing

Actually sorcerers can research spells.

Question: do you not own a PHB? Or are you just living up to your screen-name?
Actually the real information is in the DMG and not in the SRD

Spellcasters can research new spells costing [1000 GP & 1 week] per level of the spell. The costs are non refundable and it is during this time you find out if the DM will even allow the spell. Once a spell is reserch is finished, the researcher rolls a spellcraft roll DC [10+spell level]. Failure ruins everything. Sucsess means a viable spell now exists.

What can a sorcerer do with this viable spell?

At each new sorcerer level, he gains one or more new spells, as indicated on Table: Sorcerer Spells Known. (Unlike spells per day, the number of spells a sorcerer knows is not affected by his Charisma score; the numbers on Table: Sorcerer Spells Known are fixed.) These new spells can be common spells chosen from the sorcerer/wizard spell list, or they can be unusual spells that the sorcerer has gained some understanding of by study. The sorcerer can’t use this method of spell acquisition to learn spells at a faster rate, however.

So let us say a level 20 sorc with full spells known researches a spell. Does that mean he gets extra spells above and beyond what he knows, or does he have to replace spells known with the new spells?

Screaming Drill Sergeant voice: WTF gave you the impression a sorcerer could ever get spells known beyond the amount listed in the PHB?!

That is a great big no.
does he have to replace spells known with the new spells?
It was choose or lose when he leveled up to 20.

Upon reaching 4th level, and at every even-numbered sorcerer level after that (6th, 8th, and so on), a sorcerer can choose to learn a new spell in place of one he already knows. In effect, the sorcerer “loses” the old spell in exchange for the new one. The new spell’s level must be the same as that of the spell being exchanged, and it must be at least two levels lower than the highest-level sorcerer spell the sorcerer can cast. A sorcerer may swap only a single spell at any given level, and must choose whether or not to swap the spell at the same time that he gains new spells known for the level.

It means he now has a new spell on his list of spells from which he can choose to learn spells. Basically, he added another spell to the Sorcerer/Wizard list, except only for him (and anyone else he shares the knowledge with). So, then, if our 20th level Sorcerer reaches 21st level (or whatever, I don't know how epic works), he could learn the spell he researched.

He can now activate magic items with that spell as a spell trigger. :p

After 20th level, you need to learn the Extra Spell feat in order to get a new spell known.

That's not strictly true. Sorcerers can continue to swap out spells at even levels, so he could pick up his new spell at level 22 (assuming it's at least 2 levels lower than the highest level spell he can cast).

Yeah, if he continues with (epic) sorcerer or a PrC that enhances sorcerer spellcasting, that's certainly possible as well.
