Soulfire Weapons

Well, I tried. It's a bit of a metagamey concept, but I like it nonetheless. This weapon quality was inspired by a videogame called Phantasy Star Online.

Soulfire

With each successful blow, a Soulfire weapon nourishes a warrior's soul. Whenever a soulfire weapon lands an attack home in earnst combat (no XP for slicing up trees), its wielder gains 3 XP.
Caster Level: 10th. Market Value: +3 Ability Equivalent.
Prerequisites: True Strike.

Add - gain 1/4 of the damage done, though no more then 3 hp. Also, it must be real/lethal damage (no soulfire whip, nor striking an ally w regeneration).

Oh, and 1 gratuitous death threat.

I like it. It's moderately powerful, gives the XP curve a boost, and is cost-prohibitive to low-level characters. One thought: the monster has to be of a CR that would give you XP upon defeating it; thus, no epic characters beating up warponies for the little XP boost.

That's the "earnst combat" clause in the description - the caveat makes it so you simply can't cheat it.

"Now, o summoned critter, I order you into earnest combat: you will attack the other summoned critter over there, whilst I attack you. Attack!"

Hmm. If you use UK's method of calculating CRs, the XP you get (using 3.5 rules is approximately as follows:

square the CR of each monster and multiply by 300. Total and divide by the number of players. Each player character divides the result by his or her character level.

So four 10th level characters fighting a CR 10 monster get 750 xp each. If the guy with a soulfire weapon hit it 5 times, he gets an extra 15 xp. +3 bonus for a 2% increase in xp? Even if he hits it 10 times, that's still only a 4% increase.

If he fights the monster by himself (maybe its a duel to the death with a CR 10 NPC), he gets 3000 xp. Then, even if it takes 20 hits it is still only 2% extra.

I think that either the ability is overcosted, or I'm really not seeing how it will typically be used.

Remember when I used to make broken things? Yikes my eye for the power is a bit more blind then i evaluated.

Perhaps it should be left at +3, but instead of gaining a flat +3 xp per strike, perhaps instead you should score a number of xp equal to the target's CR?
