Sound effects/distortion software?

ReeboKesh

First Post
Hey guys I want to run a haunted house adventure and I would like to play audio files of the ghosts speaking during the game. I recall another DM did something similar years back but what I am after is the software that will allow me to create the eerie reverbed "ghost voice" effect you hear in movies and shows like Supernatural.
Has anyone ever tried this or know of software (preferably free) to create this effect? I have a digital recorder so all I need now is the software.
Thanks in advance

I'm just gonna go ahead and assume you're using Windows. Or that you could, anyway. Sorry if you're Mac or Linux only! :)

Grab this freeware app (Audacity), then this add-on for it. From there, you could peruse any number of places for free VST plugins (as well as other types like LADSPA at the app's plugins page) - like so:

1
2
3
4
5

And then there's Google (etc.) . . . :)

Just one of many apps, but it's quite a good one, IMO.

Best of luck with your recording!

I can vouch for Audacity's usefulness. It is very useful. I've used it quite a bit.

Great for coming up with custom ghoul snarls, provided you're not just cribbing them from Left4Dead's sound cache and I'm kicking myself for not thinking of that before just now dammit dammit dammit.

Windows sound recorder will let you add echos, increase and decrease speed and reverse a sound.

Reversing a sound and adding echo before reversing it back leaves you with a sound that is preceded by it's echos, which sounds odd to say the least.

You can also play around with increasing the sound's speed before adding echo, then reducing it back again. This lets you add echos of varying delay.

The following gives something fairly subtle:

Reverse
Decrease speed twice
Add echo
Increase speed
add echo
Increase speed
add echo
reduce speed
Reverse
