Message: <blockquote data-quote="Allegro" data-source="post: 3395747" data-attributes="member: 38814"><p>A couple points of contention: arts in Sparta for the most point were ignored except for dance.  Dance was an important training ritual the precision of group movements were useful in preparing for the heated phalanx battles.  The Spartans had flute and drum and marched to war with them and danced with them.  The Greeks uniformly were OK with slavery of none Greeks.   The Spartans were condemned not for having slaves but for having Greek-speaking slaves.  Personally I would have the surrounding city-states have orc slaves but have the Spartans have human and orc slaves.  With the majority of slaves being human.  Because of Sparta’s euthanasia program for infants who do not measure up were killed.  I would make it so no Spartan has a strength, dexterity, constitution score of less then 8.   Additionally I would not allow any Spartan to have a charisma score of less then 6.  The Agoge system was intense there were ritual battles between the different ages for example older kids were given quarterstaffs and put around an alter with cheese on it.  Younger children were expected to steal as much cheese as possible.  Older children caned sometimes to death children attempting to get the cheese.  Additionally many of the children were dumped in the hills with a knife and cloak and expected to fend for themselves.  They would reign terror down on Helots and steal from farms.  If they were caught they would be beaten not because they were stealing but because they were caught.  At the end of the Agoge the child now a man would either be accepted into a kind of drinking hall/unit or caste from Spartan society as not worthy.  They would also be given a tract of land and slaves to work it.  Spartan society was egalitarian it was not appropriate to flaunt wealth.  You could be expelled from society if you did so.  I would not have any male Wizards, or any Barbarians in the society.  I’m sure the Spartans would appreciate winning contests through muscle or magic.  Druids and Rangers would develop because of needing to live of the land.  One more thing Spartan society had 2 hereditary kings purportedly descended from Hercules.</p></blockquote><p></p>
