Spell Like Abilities and Concentration Checks

reveal

Adventurer
We all know that if a spellcaster is threatened, they can choose to cast on the defensive (Concentration check DC 15+Spell Level). If they make it, they cast and do not provoke an AOO. If they fail, they still do not provoke an AOO but they lose the spell.

My question is, do spell-like abilities work the same way?

For example, the party is fighting and the Paladin is threatened. The Paladin decides to try to Detect Evil, a spell like ability which does provoke an AOO. Can the Paladin try to "cast on the defensive?" If so, what would the DC be? Would it be 16 (15+1st level cleric spell)?

Thanx!

Yes, it's a Concentration check, and yes, the DC is 15 + level of spell being emulated.

A trickier question would be what happens in the case of lay on hands, where the spell being emulated isn't clear.

Agreed. Which is why Sean K. Reynolds suggests making it a Supernatural ability instead. That removes the AoO and makes it kinda cool that the Paladin is channeling the energy through him rather than "making" it himself.
