Spell-like abilities times per day

When a monster has spell-like abilities it will usually have a list of the abilities and the times per day they can be used. I'm a little confused by the usual layout. If the descriptions says "3/day--list of 4 spell-like abilities" does that mean a) each listed ability can be used 3 times per day, for a total of 12 uses, or b) you can only use items from this list 3 times per day total? Where is the answer to this question found? I couldn't find it in the MM (3.5) glossary under "Special Abilities" or in the MMIII glossary under "Spell-like Abilities."
