Spell resistance and robes of the archmagi

If an ally casts freedom of movement on my wizard when he has robes of the archmagi on, I would assume that he would have to roll against SR, since the spell says "Spell Resistance: Yes (Harmless)".

If my wizard were to remove the robes, he could receive the spell. When he puts the robes back on, would he still have to roll SR? SR listed in the DMG states that it also works on spells already in effect, but I'm wondering if that applies here.

That's correct. Note that creatures with SR can voluntarily lower their resistance as a standard action (see PHB, p.177).

From the SRD:

SAVING THROW...(harmless): The spell is usually beneficial, not harmful, but a targeted creature can attempt a saving throw if it desires.

The terms “object” and “harmless” mean the same thing for spell resistance as they do for saving throws. A creature with spell resistance must voluntarily lower the resistance (a standard action) in order to be affected by a spell noted as harmless. In such a case, you do not need to make the caster level check described above.

Questions answered, I think.

Note that is DOES take a standard action to lower SR which pretty much means that you have to lower SR on your turn, accept the spell on the other PC's turn, and then have it back again (no action - maybe you even get it back right after the spell is cast?), going a whole round without SR in order to recieve a spell.

That seems a bit harsh, but it's the penalty you pay for having SR.

On the bright side, " A creature’s spell resistance never interferes with its own spells, items, or abilities." so you can buff yourself with impunity.

Just mind the point blank fireballs...

As already mentioned, you can voluntarily lower your SR, so no need to remove your robes. If, however, you do decide to remove your robes and put them back on, you do not roll SR for existing spells on you.

I'll also point out that it's likely the cleric can overcome a wimpy SR 18 anyway. :)
