By the rules, no. My reasoning is that magic called forth by spells is given form via the mystic gestures and formulae of the spell. Metamagic alters those gestures and formulae, much like altering the constants in an algebra equation. Now, if there ARE no equations to alter, then...

The reasoning would not hold for sorcerers ;)

However, metamagic applies to spells, and Spellfire is not a spell.

CMIIW, but Sorcerers still have to abide by the same spellcasting rules as Wizards, no? That is, somatic gestures, verbal and material components when casting a spell...

I meant that sorcerers, while needing components, cast via the force of their personality and not via knowledge or formulae. I'm pretty sure that a sorcerer would be bored to tears if a wizard would explain to her why her magic works. She just cares that it works. :)
