Spelljammer petition + new site

Ok - here it comes, as I said it might...

In light of the fact that the maintainers of the official d20 Spelljammer site "Compendium: The Seekers Archive" ( http://www.spelljammer.org or http://www.darkwood.org/rpg/compendium/index.html ) have done very, very little with the setting since gaining control of it about eighteen months ago, and the fact that said site is now down, and has been for several days, with no forwarding address or mirror site provided, I’m asking for a Vote of No Confidence from the fan community. I’ve started a petition on my own, brand-spanking-new Spelljammer site, the Rock of Bral, located at http://www.rpgaction.com/spelljammer - please take a look and, if you are in agreement, add your name to the thing.

On a similar note, the Rock of Bral will also be posting its own conversions - in fact, the first has already been posted - and I hope to turn it into a contender for the position of official d20 Spelljammer site should Wizards of the Coast reopen said position. Right now I’m looking for some talented, creative Spelljammer fans to help with the site...well, all the info I have at the moment is there. (If you don’t agree with me on the whole "Rock of Bral becomes the official site" bit, not to worry; the petition I’ve started specifically states that the process involved in selecting a new fan site should be an open call. I'm not expecting you all to swear your undying loyalty to me here by any means.)

As I said, open call. If The Shattered Fractine wants to throw its hat in the ring, they're more than welcome. To be honest, I very specifically wanted to avoid other folks' SJ work while I started on my own, but now that that's over with I'll check it out.

And bear in mind that Rock of Bral just went online. Of course most sites will have more than it does at the moment. That'll change.

<looks around> This can't end well...

On another note, I'm the one who spent a LOT of time converting the Giff... I would hope that no matter what site is "official" all of my work will still be KEPT official....

Thanks
Chris

Yeah, I'm gonna give this a *bump*.

I might give it one more tomorrow when a different crowd is on, and that'll be it. Spread the word, folks! The more names we have on this petition, the more effective it'll be!

Hiya Chris!

You know, I was going to put up my own conversion of the Giff in honor of the site's launch...but then I remembered that the official site had done a conversion and thought better of it.

I don't have your conversion in front of me at the moment, but IF the Rock of Bral becomes the official site I'll certainly be willing to review your work. Seems like the Giff was a pretty solid piece so I wouldn't worry about it.

In the meantime, I'll avoid converting the Giff until this mess is sorted out. What else did you do, just so I know?

I added my name to the list as well...site looks great so far.

Perhaps I'll polish up some of my Spelljammer stuff and submit it to you...

I'm also looking forward to that issue of Dungeon that tackles Spelljammer.

Spelljammer only grows if one put material up on the web to share with others. It not really matter who is offical as long as there is new material that builds up the setting.

I strongly ask those who have conversion or new material, indeed put the material up on site and if you not know html then give it to a spelljammer site and they will post it. AS someone who has a site up (http://www.shatteredfractine.com/) I know that few people do submit material. The owner of the site should not be the only Contributor of his own site.

As for me I not want to ride this "wave" again (as it happen with Troy), I will simple spend my time creating new material/converisons.

Yes, there are a number of unofficial sites that are doing conversions, but think on this:

When someone wants to know about Spelljammer, where are they generally sent? EVERY TIME someone's asked about the basics, in my experience, they've been referred to the official site. Why? Because it's the "official site"! They're the best, right?!

Right?!

Except they aren't. Oops.

Further, no one is really coming up with a basic rules set for Spelljammer 3E. I think there's a perception - and one that I happen to agree with - that that should be left to the official site. Heck, for all I know, any unofficial site that posted a "Spelljammer's Handbook" or what have you would land in legal trouble with Wizards of the Coast.

And the simple fact of the matter is that there are fans who don't want just any conversion; they want an OFFICIAL conversion. Yeah, all this fan stuff is nice, but knowing that something is canon makes you feel all warm and fuzzy inside. They're expecting great things from the official site, and they don't deserve to be disappointed.

The official site represents our community. It should not be allowed to sit around doing more or less nothing.

*Bump,* by the way.
