Ive been reading the Spelljammer war captains companion book to make my own spelljammer ships however when i got through making one with plating and Thickening of armor the best i can get with Thick wood is AC 7, Where as a very similar ship to the one i made the whaleship also uses thick wood but has an AC value of 4, am i missing something?

I wish I could help you, but I don't have my Spelljammer books in front of me at the moment.

However, you might have more luck with this question in the D&D Legacy Board, which will be frequented by those who are both active and well-versed in the ins and outs of pre-4Ed D&D.

Either re-post your question in that forum or contact a Moderator- they can move threads to appropriate fora.

(And if I get my hands on my books soon, I'll try to help you out some more!)

Just that in AD&D AC went down from 10, not up. Armor Class started out at AC 10 as it does in 3e/Pathfinder and 4e, but Full Plate was AC 2, not AC 18/19. AC 4 in 2e is better than AC 7.

The most important thing in creating Spelljammer ships is that they look weird; does your ship look like a bug, a hybrid animal, or an unnatural geometric shape? B-)

PDF's to the rescue ;)

Depends on sizing as well.
And what race makes the ship.
Human(general) - +1AR or MC or one special
Thick Wood (Heavy) has a Base Cost of 1,000gp and AR of 9.

Ok found the Whaleship entry in The Legend of SJ Box Set.

mmmm your right it's Thick Wood and a MC of E at 80tons.

So your ship:
Thick Wood - AC 9
Human (general) builder - +1 AC (now AC8)
Hull Thickening - +1 AC (now AC7) * uses 20% (min 1 ton) of available cargo space to do so.
Armor Plating - +1 AC but drops MC by 1 class. (now AC6)

Other steps that can be taken according to the War Captain's Companion -
Different materials to use. This can increase the AR of the ship.
And Special Arcane Modifers: "Increase (Subtract) AC Rating to a maximum of AC4 - This is on page 73 of the War Captain's Guide: Book 1.

I believe the Special Arcane Modifers is what accounts for the Whaleship's Armor Rating.

AC 4 in 2e is better than AC 7.
I think he understands this. That's why he's asking the question like he is.

1) Most of the ship's tonnages etc never made sense, lol ;)
I build my re-creations of the Spelljammer ships in 3D using an app used in actual ship building, so I can get their exact enclosed volume, which is never anything like the official ones

2) There's arguements over what exactly tonnage is...I'll leave that ot others to work out so I note my ships down in cubic feet so folk can work it out for themselves :p
