Doomspace used to (uniquely?) have a "crystal sphere". But it was destroyed by the (Forgotten Realms) gods. The shards of the crystal are now like asteroid debris. It is hard to say whether the "crystal sphere" existed in the astral plane or the material plane or simultaneously both, with an overlap. Since it was the primordials that created it, presumably the crystal was made out of elemental matter. Indeed a material gaseous planet was destroyed to make the crystal sphere. So it is probably material. But it might simultaneously overlap the astral plane as an astral barrier as well. The wording refers to "Doomspace", namely the term for the astral wildspace system, being "encased" by the crystal sphere. So, the crystal sphere must be at least astral. But it might be material too − with full overlap. So the crystal shards from its destruction probably exist both in the material and the astral Doomspace. The crystal shards now resemble something like grayish smoky quartz, and least that is what it looks like after its destruction. Interestingly, the crystal is "indestructible", and cannot be broken or chipped by any known source. How the crystal was destroyed in the first place is now a mystery. The concept of a crystal gem that is "invincible" is the original meaning of the Greek concept of "adamans", whence English "diamond", and words like "adamant" and "adamantine". But the Greek descriptions originally describe colorless corundum, relating to sapphire and ruby, and emery abrasive, which is more resilient and heat-resistant than diamond is.
