I saw Transformers last night. Amazing movie, with a lot more subtlety than you'd expect in a summer flick. First off, it's obvious that the big new villain is a cybernetic stand-in for Satan, as he destroys or assimilates all in his path. That might seem out of place in a modern/sci-fi movie, but it works perfectly to tie into the movie's primary arc, which is basically a re-envisioned Grail quest. At first the movie starts normally enough, with Decepticons launching an assault on the Autobot stronghold. Dramatic action sequence, tons of characters we all know and love getting screen time to either kick ass or get asses kicked, as well as a chance for the robot’s sidekick kid to show how utterly lame and ineffectual he is. The music choice is a bit odd – a lot stuff that sounds right out of the 80s – but I suppose they were going for nostalgia, so it fits. But then there’s the twist. Spoiler alert: Megatron kills Optimus Prime! And that’s what sparks the whole quest. Along the way, the giant robot ‘Devil’ tempts Megatron with power and revenge, but ultimately turns him into a pawn, while an Autobot who you totally wouldn’t suspect ends up proving his spiritual worth as he rises to take on Optimus’s mantle of leadership. It all culminates in an epic battle in space around the planet Cybertron, as the planet-destroying space demon transforms into a titan, the heroes launch a two-pronged assault into the heart of this living, mechanical Hell. Believe you me, you’ll love this movie! [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=COYRxf13tIg"]YouTube - Touch by Stan Bush from the Transformers The Movie[/ame]
