[Spoilers] Smallville

Anyone watch this?

I feel it started off weakly with it's kryptonite-villain-of-the-week formula, but that towards the end it started to get much stronger. The season finale, in particular, was excellent with Lex Luthor's true colours slowly starting to show through.

Seems odd the way they've put a lot of characters in a position whereby they can easily not return next year. Lionel Luthor could die, Lana likewise, as could Clark's father; and Whitney has just gone off to join the marines.

I'm hoping they kill off Lionel so as to give Lex his wings (so to speak); I can't see Lana dying as she is a staple part of the traditional Superman mythos. Clark's father could either die or not, depending on whose version of Superman you want to follow (I don't read the comics mush - is he still alive there?).

I really liked the beginning of the show, but then they went into the stupid super villian of the week. The girl controlling the bees put me over the edge. I missed the finally for Buffy and recorded NYPD Blue. I will catch it over the summer in reruns.

The next season will have to change or I will stop watching and I love almost anything with a super hero.

Yep, real pain though with 24 on at the same time. A lot of people here are probably like CamelToe and watched Buffy instead or something else.

Thought I'd add that I felt it started off a little weak as well. I figured I'd finish the season and just not bother watching it next season, I can't stand starting something and not finishing (there are only two novels I ever started reading and not finished).

I believe Clark?s parents are dead in the comics now, not sure since I don?t read and Superman books but I recall reading about it.

I bet the reason for half the characters potentially leaving is just in case they want to make major changes to the series without just dropping them and trying to explain it later.

I have a feeling we?ll be seeing Clark fly very early next season.

Didn't they specifically say that that wouldn't happen? "No flights, no tights", if I recall.

Various replies, in no particular order...

Re Lana Lang: Kristin Kreuk is on next season's cast list, so I'm darn sure Lana will survive. However, it has been hinted that someone will discover Clark's powers, and in the comics - Lana knows he's Superman. Granted, she learned about it when Clark left for Metropolis, but the producers may change that.

On a similar note - I'd say all bets are off when it comes to who lives and who dies on this show. The producers have followed current continuity to an extent, and traditional continuity to an extent, but they've made it clear that they're not afraid to go in new directions. If Kristin Kreuk, or Sam Jones III (Pete Ross), or virtually anyone else aside from Tom Welling and (perhaps) Michael Rosenbaum (? - Lex Luthor) decided to leave - I imagine the producers would be perfectly willing to kill them off if that seemed to be the best course of action.

Regarding Ma and Pa Kent: still alive in current continuity, though recent developments have led some readers to believe that Pa Kent might be leaving us soon. In Superman's original origin story, the Kents did indeed die, but Crisis on Infinite Earths and the subsequent reboot changed all that.

Re the "Kryptonite freak of the week" thing and next season: my understanding is that they will be moving away from that somewhat, and in fact, they have already begun that process. "Stray" - the episode with the telepathic kid - had nothing to do with Kryptonite; the season finale had nothing to do with those mysterious green rocks; the episode before it ("Obscura") MAY have involved Kryptonite, but I don't think that was ever explicitly stated. "Rogue" (corrupt cop tries to blackmail Clark) and "Zero" (a man killed in Lex's presence comes back, apparently, to haunt him) had nothing to do with Kryptonite either. I think the idea of Kryptonite as a somewhat unpredictable substance which can also affect humans is somewhat interesting - particularly when you consider that it often gives said humans superpowers, where it weakens Clark - but I think they have overdone it, and I don't think they've handled it very well. Virtually everyone affected by Kryptonite, for example, has used their powers to ill purpose. I actually had an idea for an episode which would have involved Kryptonite but explored the reactions of certain townspeople to it - but I don't believe Smallville is accepting scripts from freelancers, agented or otherwise, at this point in time.

And yes, as far as I am aware, the "no flights, no tights" rule does remain in effect. No guarantees about leaping tall buildings in a single bound, though - we might see a few superleaps next season, for all I know. (Wouldn't have to involve flight, just the proper application of existing abilities.)

I loved the season finale to "Smallville" even though I taped it so I could watch the entire "Buffy" season finale. This is setting up so many things for the second season that I was on the edge of my seat.

the rock thing

I hope they get away from the rock thing myself.
But remember that we know the futures of Clark and Lex. Lex becomes President and is responisble for nuclear destruction. Clark, being superman, will outlive everyone he loves.

Actually, while it's been implied - heck, specifically stated - that Superman COULD be immortal, that's no guarantee that he'll live forever.

Well...ok, in a sense he will; but only because DC will publish Superman comic books as long as people will buy them. On the other hand, when you look at it that way, Lois, Lex, Jimmy and the rest are all effectively immortal as well. ;)

We've mainly seen Superman living forever in Elseworlds books - they haven't, AFAIK, tackled the subject in the official lines.

So that's not just a season one thing?

Any way the main reason I mentioned flying is because I don't see how clark can help Lana otherwise.

What a night of TV we got the Buffy, 24 and Smallville season finales and there was a hockey game all on same night.

I believe it will extend through most, if not all, seasons. My thinking is that flight will be the last power Clark gains, and he will then decide to become Superman.

Of course, the producers said nothing about assisted flight; Clark could easily let himself be lifted up by the tornado, retrieve Lana, and force his way out. That seems a bit complicated, though, so my guesses would be:

- Superleap (jump in, get Lana, jump out)
- Superbreath (blow the tornado apart, run over, catch Lana's truck, save Lana)

I think a new power will be involved no matter what, but I'm pretty sure it won't be flight.
