Spring attack and reach

I'd like to ask some clarification concerning the spring attack description (sorry, I know it's boring :). It says that the attacker using a spring attack doesn't get an AOO from the defender.
That means the attacker moves forward attacks and passes by the defender without provoking an AOO although he traversed several threatened areas.

Does something change if the defender has reach? Wouldn't think so....

A rogue spring attacking a spiked chain wielding storm giant wouldn't provoke AoO's for moving through his numerous threatened square, no. He would provoke AoO's from any other giant in the vincinity, though.

So we didn't make some big mistakes last session. Thanks a bunch! :)

We had trouble with this one as well... it just seems a little odd. However, I assume that it is one of those playability before reality situations where it just doesn't work otherwise.

In one of the campaigns I play in, the DM found it necessary to nerf the feat to not provoking AoO's in relation to a single square (ie you're screwed if the opponent has more than 5' reach, or if you try to make a "run-by" attack).

Well.. your DM nerfed it to a point of making it almost useless. Now it would just be a step towards whirlwind. Stop at mobility then, and go to cleave chain instead.

YMMV

I think that this feat is devised to let you move-attack-move, not to charge a colossal creature without taking a single attack of opportunity.

That way it is a far too good feat.

This is the ideal feat for the half-orc barbarian wearing light armor against a heavily armed opponent (gnome or such opponents are unable to counterattack...). You can devise an hit and run tecnique against opponents who have a worse initiative than yours... They won't be able to ready an action to attack you!

So if you don't let the opponent the chance to defend himself with a greater reach weapon, you have an almost invincible combo...

You seem to be confused on the rules.

1. You MUST move 5' before and after the attack for Spring Attack, so cannot charge with Spring Attack.

2. Iniative is more-or-less fliud - you can, ineed, ready an action even if you intiative is lower - your readied action simply carries over into the next round.

Collosal creatures have, what, +16 on their trip rolls, from size alone? You could ready, or on your turn, just charge them, or whatnot.

Or just Awesome Blow them onto the floor...

The real power in Spring Attacking lies when you Spring Attack with a reach weapon against a medium non-reach wielder, then jump back.

You get AoO + Attack vs their Attack. If they try to PA you to make up the loss of their full attack, disarm them.

But I always like Mobility in combat.
