Spy Creature

Dog Moon

Adventurer
Here's another template for your viewing pleasure [I hope]. I was thinking about Yuan-ti encounters and came up with this idea.

These creatures appear as small lizards or snakes which are natural to the forest or swamp they are normally encountered in, except the only physical difference is that their eyes are bigger than normal [Knowledge nature DC 20 to realize that it isn't normal]. They behave in the same ways as normal lizards until they see someone or something approaching. They then send a signal back to their creator, similar to the way the alarm spell works when triggered. The creator then is able to see through the eyes of the creature. The creator can cast any visual spells, such as Darkvision or See Invisibility to increase the visual potential of the creature, but no other spells. These are occasionally used offensively, to spy out areas, but are mainly used to watch for intruders.
"Spy creature" is a template which can be added to any lizard or snake.

Size and Type: Neither changes, though animals do gain the Augmented Subtype.

Special Qualities: Keeps that of the base creature and gains the following:

Immunity to Poison

Poison Breath (Su): 20 ft cone. Initial and secondary damage 1d3 Con. Fort DC 10 + Con mod. This occurs once per day when the create is first hit. The blow strikes the creature and it lets out the gas as a free action.

Poison Explode (Su): 20 ft radius. Initial and secondary damage 1d3 Con. Fort DC 10 + Con mod. This occurs once the creature is brought to -10 hp and is considered dead.

Alarm (Su): This works like the alarm spell, except that it triggers whenever a creature walks within 30 feet of the creature. Whether or not the creature can still be seen, the alarm is triggered. It is up to the creator to determine by whom and how the alarm was triggered.

Conduit (Su): The creator can see through the eyes of the creature at any time it pleases. It takes a full-round action to sense and locate the creature. The creator at this time, can control the creature where and how to move, though it cannot force the creature to do anything else. The creator can cast spells to affect the creature, but only those which revolve around sight, such as Darkvision or See Invisibility.

Does Not Need to Eat (Ex)

Skills: The creature gains a +8 racial bonus on Spot checks.

Challenge Rating: ?

The secrets of altering these creatures in this way is known only to the Yuan-ti. The Yuan-ti slowly mix their own poison into these creature, slowly changing it's blood into a poison, though it's bite does not deal this extra poison. Poison is also added into the creature's stomach. This poison is a combination of the Yuan-ti's own poison and a variant mixture, allowing the creature to feed on this poison which slowly regenerates itself. This prevents the creature from needing any outside nutrients and also has the effect of releasing the pent up gas as a belch when it is first struck by a weapon.
The Yuan-ti place these creatures in various places circling their home to watch out for intruders. Though the creator is most often the one who is connected to this creature, the creatures are occasionally granted to other spellcasters who have the ability to cast various vision-improving spells.
Rarely, these creatures are sent to attack. Though they only deal their normal, minor damage, the poison gas can be considered potent.

Is there a way you could introduce some weaknesses?

Doesn't Eat
Immune to poison
Poisonous attack
Explodes for damage when you kill it
Presumably doesn't sleep
Links to the eyes of the creator
Effective proximity alarm.

This sort of positive list with no downsides would be really major magic, not a sentry alarm.

Something like : The poisons used to convert the base creature slowly work their way through the pores and orifaces of the body. As it is deployed it begins to leave a trail (almost imperceivable at first). Without maintenance the lifespan of these creatures is caster level days.

What are the costs of creation?
