Stacking Metamagic Feats..

Iscariot

First Post
In another thread on this board, there were some "smack" characters. Munchkiness at it's grandest (though I am loathe to use munchkin and grand in the same sentence...ewww). At any rate, one of the characters had 10 X Extended spells. One of these being 5th level when the character can only cast up to 8th level spells.

How do you stack that many extensions on one spell legally? Or is this even legal at all? If so, where are the rules on this?

I would imagine a 5th level spell could have no more than +4 levels of metamagic adjustments considering that would make it a ninth level spell slot.

What am I missing here?

This is only possible in 3.0, since in 3.5 Metamagic Feats no longer stack with themselves, anyways.

You can use rods of metamagic, for example, to add a metamagic effect to a spell without increasing its spell level. And there are a few more methods to do that.

In 3.0 it was ambigious if this was possible or not. Since you could apply multiple, different metamagic feats it seemed reasonable (especially for extend) to allow multiple instances of the same feat. This of course ignores the 3.0 guidline that bonuses from the same source don't stack. It wasn't overpowering until certain prestige classes came online that were optimized for metamagic use.

In 3.5 this is no longer possible.

SRD:
Multiple Metamagic Feats on a Spell: A spellcaster can apply multiple metamagic feats to a single spell. Changes to its level are cumulative. You can’t apply the same metamagic feat more than once to a single spell.
*emphasis mine.

3.0 the best ways to add multiple metamagic feats to a spell was through improved metamagic, metamagic rods, instant metamagic, circle magic, and spell dancing. The threads you are likely referring to contain all of the above. ;)

All gone now. :) 3.5 brought some sanity to that creative exercise. :D

The funny part was, I was referring to one of YOUR posts! lol Small world and all.

I use a lot of the tricks you use for your cleric (mine is a cleric/mystic wanderer/spelldancer), I was just not seeing the 10 times extended. *chuckles* You took it to whole new levels. Anyway, appreciate the answers. My players are discovering t he glory of metamagic and I wanted to prevent them form trying things like this (no offense).

Thanks for the input people!

more like they brought a lot of stuipidity to an already sane situation. the normal use of stacking metamagic is fine, its only when you use insantiy like you decsribed that it gets bad, and that's what a dm is for. instead they destroyed the legitimite uses damaging the playablity of the average player in order to make it easier on the weak or naive dms.
