I agree with your overall assessment of Han's ark in the OT and how Solo feels out of place with how the character is first introduced, but having just recently rewatched ESB, I think you're doing him a disservice here. Han mentions the bounty hunters and then gets ready to leave. He decides to stay only because Luke is missing and he's willing to risk his life to go in search of his friend. And when they get back, he's actually forbidden to leave because the general is not allowing any ship to leave until the shield is in place. Which doesn't make sense because he was ok with Han's leaving before, but yet the movie shows that Han is still intending to leave once he's sure his friend is out of danger. Leia and Han are equally manipulative of each other. She denies any feeling for him and claims that she only wants him to stay because he's important to the rebellion and a natural leader. While she may be rationalizing, I don't think she'd say that of somebody who treats subordinates as garbage. And also, is Han position here so unreasonable? He believes is life is in danger, but he's also in love with Leia, so if Leia actually reciprocates his feeling his willing to risk it and stay.
