Later on in the game they get to train as a Jedi, and later still as a Sith, and can choose which path to follow in the final part of the game. The game uses a point system for tracking lightside/darkside.One of the companion characters is a grey jedi, who can use both the light and dark side without committing to either.In KotOR 2, the player character's mentor is another grey jedi, who also turns out to be the main villain.One of the Sith Lords in KotOR 2 is called Darth Sion. I mention this as it was referenced in Ahsoka - The Eye of Sion. Sion is basically unkillable as he sustains his life with the force.
