I think maybe there was several layers to what was going on in this episode. The answer was 46, partially because of the relation to human genetics mentioned in the episode. But I think also it was connected to the death of Rush's wife because he's been constantly beating himself up over it, and I felt after Daniel's second appearance that coming to grips with it, when he's really been avoiding it for two or more years was the real answer rather than trying to solve some piece of code. That's because the Ancients have always been big on the whole mind-body wholeness/oneness spiritual stuff, and it's connected to ascension and all that. That's why all the information was coming faster to Rush when he was with her, but he's so busy running from his feelings that he didn't get it. He must have picked up enough on the Ancients by this point that he shouldn't have been so clueless on it. Jackson: "Well, it's not the ultimate answer to Life, the Universe and Everything..." Me: "Yeah, you're off by 4." Jackson: "...that's 42. The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy". Me: "Yeah, thanks Jackson, I hardly needed that lampshaded." The subplot with the ruins was pretty good. I laughed with malicious glee when that spider showed up, because of Chloe freaking out over the cobwebs. She needs a good scare. At the beginning of the episode, I sarcastically referred to her as the "emotion vampire" when she went over to Eli, because she's the type of person who can be just so draining at times. And there's that mean game she's playing with Eli (probably even subconsciously) where's she toying with his feelings, and wants to be "friends" while likely oblivious to the crush he has on her. Annoyed that Hulu's now on an 8-day delay for the episodes. Kind of messes with web discussions of the show when you know people are already talking about the plot for the next episode before you've even seen the freakin' previous one.
