Stargate Universe #3

Remember, Rush said the Sgt. was not the kind of guy that he'd have approved...and that he (Rush) was part of the personnel approval committee. To me, that says "Sgt. Angry" was placed on the base for a particular reason by a particular person in one of the agencies or gov't branches overseeing the Stargate program. Assassin? Spy? Saboteur? Psych experiment?

Well, Greer (Sgt. Angry) was in the brig during the attack on the base. He was only let out because to leave him there would condemn him to die. And now, Commander Young has limited resources and must rely on those he has available. Young and Scott (Sgt "I have a weepy past") seem to trust him. And really, they haven't had a lot of time to sort everything out yet, and there was the whole, "We're gonna die from lack of air" thing going on . . .

Methinks that Greer is basically a good guy, but has anger issues . . .

I doubt there is a conspiracy of sorts behind Greer being at Icarus Base. I think it's much more simple, we aren't being given idealized versions of military characters in the new Stargate, but rather more realistic portrayals . . . which means flaws . . .

On the one hand, I hope you're right...but how many stories involving Gov't/military personnel have you seen lately in which there wasn't at least one with a hidden- usually espionage/black ops type- agenda?

I hardly think a double-agent is necessary for a story involving the military. But rumors are circulating that there is a Lucian Alliance spy amongst the crew. I have no idea if those rumors have any legitimacy to them or not, but it's possible. Sure, Greer could be some sort of spy, double-agent, or officer with divided loyalties (is the NID still a player in SG?), but based on what we've seen so far, I think it's quite a leap to assume he is. He's obviously got anger issues, and that's enough right there to create some interesting conflict, it certainly has so far. It's not like we don't have those types in our military in real life.

With the Lucian Alliance thing mentioned upthread, it'd take a bit for an alien power group to insert someone into SG Command. But perhaps they bought someone off somehow . . . . if this possible plot thread does materialize at all . . .
