Starting as a Prestige class

Whoa! What race and what prestige class? I'd personally make the player take a level of a normal class first. Taking it at first level seems to go against the purpose of prestige classes. IMHO, I'd say that any prestiege class that can be taken before 3rd level (I'd rather 4th or 5th, but I'm being generous) would seem poorly designed.

Hmmm, ok, so it's a monster class. I think that's different from the normal classes. I can't remember who has the excellent FAQ on this, but I think that's what you want. I *believe* that if you have monster levels you don't get the 1st level skill points for taking any class anyway. I'd still prefer someone to take at least one regular class level first, but if you have monster levels then that might be different.

Icebear is correct. Think of it as multiclassing with your "monster class" (mind flayer, in this case), which has already provided you with skill points, and the new PrC that you're taking. So no multiplying of skill points for the first PrC level.

There's no problem with taking a PrC at character creation, since many monsters can fulfil PrC requirements without needing PC class levels. One of the WotC adventure path modules, for example, has a Trumpet Archon (fallen) Blackguard2, with no other class levels.

Thanks for that clarification shilsen. Yeah, as a monster I guess a prestige class is fine as the first "non-monster" class. I still had my mind fixated on "normal" races and how a prestige class is to be "prestigeous" :D But, yeah, it should be no problem for a monster.
