He has short cropped brown hair and a short beard. Daelyn is not unnatractive, but is a bit awkward, almost as it he doesn't really know where his body begins and ends. He wears simple traveler's clothes and a wide brimmed hat. He wears a black mantled duster to keep the dust of the road off his clothes.</p><p>Deamenaor: He is confident in his abilities and eager to prove himself. He is generally good natured but can occasionally drift into darker moods when his quest to free himself of his demonic pact seems hopeless. Though he is a bit physically awkward, he carries himself well and is a good speaker.[/sblock] </p><p>[sblock=Background]</p><p></p><p>I....am damned.</p><p></p><p>Now, there are some who might take that as the hyperbole of a man down on his luck and deep in his cups, or perhaps the wishful thinking of some of my early intructors. However, in my case it happens to be the literal truth. But, I get ahead of myself.</p><p></p><p>My name is Daelyn, third son of House Ildinia, a small, barely noteworthy noble house of *insert city*. In fact, most of the other nobles refer to us as young bloods, and not as a term of endearment. My father was a successful merchant and managed to buy his way into nobility after a particularly costly war with a neighboring city-state. House Ildinia is by no means wealthy. Our estate lay on the very edge of Hightown. On particularly clear days, you would be treated with a marvelous view of the bay and harbor from my balcony. On particularly windy days, you’d be treated with the marvelous smell of the bay and harbor. The grounds were very modest, and my father could not afford any servants to keep the place tidy.</p><p></p><p>My father was a very shrewd and careful man. Most nobility believe in the phrase an “Heir and a spare” when it comes to children. Well, apparently my father decided to go the extra mile. Unfortunately, this meant there would be very little of our meager family fortune to spare for me should the spares not be required. As we grew older, my eldest brother was prepared to inherit the family title, fortune, and businesses. My middle brother entered the military. He was a natural athlete. My father purchased him a military rank and he was sent away to the military academy with many of the other second sons of the city’s nobility. </p><p></p><p>I, was another story. I was born frail and sick. In fact, its a miracle that I even made it past early childhood. I’ll give my father credit, he tried to afford me the same gifts he gave my brothers, but the academy wouldn’t have me for any amount of gold. I was therefore left with two options, the clergy or enroll at the Arcane Academy. My physical frailty left me with very little faith in any form of divine, so that pretty much just left one option. </p><p></p><p>It just so happened that wizards were not looked upon very highly in polite society, but nobody could argue their value. Most noble families had at least one Wizard advisor or retainer from the academy in residence. Some had multiple specialists to cover everything from alchemical needs, to teleportation, and battlemages. My father hoped I might either return to the family after my schooling, or join another noble house, possibly hitching our house name to a stronger ally.</p><p></p><p>When I was sent to with Arcane Academy, I wasn’t happy at first. I felt that somehow fate had cheated me out of sharing the noble heritage my brothers had. I yearned to be a gallant warrior or leader of men like my brothers. As time went by, I found I had a fairly strong natural talent for magic. The dusty books and tomes of the school opened my eyes to a new world of wonders that I could never have imagined. Finally I began to see a place for myself in the world, a way for me to stand proud with my family. Sadly, those days were far to few.</p><p></p><p>On the day of my graduation, I wandered down to one of the lower level laboratories. The kind of place few people went of their own accord. A fellow classmate had stolen my spellbook and hidden it somewhere in the lower catacombs in a petty attempt at revenge after I was selected by a particularly beautiful archmage to be her apprentice. If I could not recover the book by the time the graduation ceremony took place, I would not graduate. A wizard’s spellbook was his life. Without it, a mage was nothing. Losing your spellbook was the worst infraction a student could make. I would lose my apprenticeship and everything I had worked for.</p><p></p><p>As I wandered the damp corridors, dark, rhythmic chanting echoed at the very edge of my hearing. The chanting wormed its way inside of my head, throbbing and pulsing, speaking to that dark twisted place that lives inside my mind. The rest of the students and faculty were preparing for the evening’s ceremonies. No one should have been down there. At this point, I should have just swallowed my pride and found a sympathetic wizard to help divine the location of my book. But then, my tale wouldn’t be nearly as interesting.</p><p></p><p>No, like every headstrong youth, I believed I was both invincible and feared the japes and jears of my peers should I return without my book. Besides, something about the chanting was attractive. It pulled at me, promising things. It promised power, strength, respect...all the things I craved. When I finally reached the source of chant, it had become so loud I could think of nothing else but the words of power echoing in my mind. I opened the door of the lab and was horrified by what I saw.</p><p></p><p>One of the faculty I recognized was standing in front of an old stone altar. Deep channels were carved into the side of it, stained a deep crimson with what I can only assume was blood. In the mage’s hand was a curved bone dagger that he waved through the air as he chanted. On stone was one of my classmates, a young common girl that I barely knew. Her eyes were vacant, as if stunned by some kind of spell or drug. As I stood there, the mage reached the end of his incantation.</p><p></p><p>“I summon thee, Abraxas Abraxas Abraxas. Accept my sacrifice and grant me power!”</p><p></p><p>Summoning demons was expressly forbidden, let alone dark magic involving human sacrifice. As my brain processed what was happening, time seemed to slow down. The floor cracked and split violently as a swirling vortex spilled out over the floor like a hurricane. The form of the demon crawled from depths of the portal, pulling itself into the material realm as the wizard’s dagger slowly plunged toward the girl’s chest. I could sense the beasts hunger.</p><p></p><p>At that moment, I did the second stupidest thing I have ever done. I yelled “Stop.” Time completely stopped. The mage’s dagger hung in mid air, a look of euphoric glee locked on his face like some kind of twisted reveler. The demon turned slowly and looked into me. It made a horrible sound, like bones breaking. I realized it was laughing at me. Then, it spoke.</p><p></p><p>“Why should I stop mageling. Your elder here has offered me a tasty morsel on a plater. All he asks in return is more power. It never ceases to amaze me how willing mortals are to trade what is eternal for that which is fleeting.”</p><p></p><p>I thought quickly, or possibly slowly, it was hard to tell how long we stood there. I could never hope to defeat the mage or the demon on my own. If it weren’t for the strange time loop the demon seemed to have us in, the girl’s blood would already be staining the alter. It was then that proceeded to do the absolute stupidest thing I had ever done. I decided to try and bluff a demon. I planted my feet and spoke in the most patriarchal voice I could manage.</p><p></p><p>“I am no mageling demon! I am a wizard! My power is known throughout the multiverse. I wish to enter a bargain with you, in exchange for destroying that mage and leaving the girl unharmed, I offer you my soul. Surely the soul of an archmage is worth more then some common girl.”</p><p></p><p>Again, the voice of cracking bones echoed through the hall. I felt my heart sink. I had failed. I’m not sure what I had thought to accomplish. Then, the demon stopped. Demons thrive on pure chaos. The suggestion of destroying the one who had summoned it must have appealed to it, for suddenly the demon responded. </p><p></p><p>“Agreed”</p><p></p><p>Time snapped back into place like a bowstring. The dagger struck the stone altar and shattered. The girl was no longer there. She was lying safely in the corner of the room. The wizard had a moment to look confused before the demon crushed his skull with one meaty claw. Without even glancing my way, the demon slid back through the portal. He left me with one last portent.</p><p></p><p>“When your soul leaves this realm of flesh and bone, I will return to claim what is mine.”</p><p></p><p>As the portal snapped shut, nothing remained in the laboratory to suggest anything out of the ordinary had happened. Well, expect the headless wizard of course. That proved to be rather problematic.</p><p></p><p>When the faculty learned of what had happened, and what I had done to stop the sacrifice, I was immediately shackled and thrown in the dungeon to await execution. The school has a rather non-nonsense approach to dealing with those that consort with demons. If it weren’t for the young girls testimony on my behalf, I’d be as headless as the mage I had stopped. The sentence of execution was commuted to banishment. My family disowned me. My father was ashamed and could not risk it be known that his family harbored a demon worshipper. My spellbook was burned and I was driven out of the city with a small pouch of gold I had saved and the robe on my back. </p><p></p><p>I have but one option left open to me. On the road I have heard some travellers speak of the Stonefist Academy. A place of learning. A place where I could find a new beginning. I knew I wouldn’t make it long on my own. Even if I did, I needed to find a way to get my soul back, otherwise when I died I would be doomed to spend eternity in the Abyss. Sometimes, I can hear the voice of the demon laughing and taunting me. It urges me to further temptation. I must find a way to save my soul.Perhaps Stonefist Academy held the answers I saught.</p><p></p><p>During my trek to the Academy I have slowly been able to piece together a new spellbook. A favor for a hedgewizard here, a village witch there have earned me a few moldier spell scrolls. By the time I reached the Academy, I at least had a few cantrips and minor spells. He has short cropped brown hair and a short beard. Daelyn is not unnatractive, but is a bit awkward, almost as it he doesn't really know where his body begins and ends. He wears simple traveler's clothes and a wide brimmed hat. He wears a black mantled duster to keep the dust of the road off his clothes. He is generally good natured but can occasionally drift into darker moods when his quest to free himself of his demonic pact seems hopeless. Now, there are some who might take that as the hyperbole of a man down on his luck and deep in his cups, or perhaps the wishful thinking of some of my early intructors. However, in my case it happens to be the literal truth. But, I get ahead of myself. My name is Daelyn, third son of House Ildinia, a small, barely noteworthy noble house of *insert city*. In fact, most of the other nobles refer to us as young bloods, and not as a term of endearment. My father was a successful merchant and managed to buy his way into nobility after a particularly costly war with a neighboring city-state. House Ildinia is by no means wealthy. Our estate lay on the very edge of Hightown. On particularly clear days, you would be treated with a marvelous view of the bay and harbor from my balcony. On particularly windy days, you’d be treated with the marvelous smell of the bay and harbor. The grounds were very modest, and my father could not afford any servants to keep the place tidy. My father was a very shrewd and careful man. Most nobility believe in the phrase an “Heir and a spare” when it comes to children. Well, apparently my father decided to go the extra mile. Unfortunately, this meant there would be very little of our meager family fortune to spare for me should the spares not be required. As we grew older, my eldest brother was prepared to inherit the family title, fortune, and businesses. My middle brother entered the military. He was a natural athlete. My father purchased him a military rank and he was sent away to the military academy with many of the other second sons of the city’s nobility. I, was another story. I was born frail and sick. In fact, its a miracle that I even made it past early childhood. I’ll give my father credit, he tried to afford me the same gifts he gave my brothers, but the academy wouldn’t have me for any amount of gold. I was therefore left with two options, the clergy or enroll at the Arcane Academy. My physical frailty left me with very little faith in any form of divine, so that pretty much just left one option. It just so happened that wizards were not looked upon very highly in polite society, but nobody could argue their value. Most noble families had at least one Wizard advisor or retainer from the academy in residence. Some had multiple specialists to cover everything from alchemical needs, to teleportation, and battlemages. My father hoped I might either return to the family after my schooling, or join another noble house, possibly hitching our house name to a stronger ally. When I was sent to with Arcane Academy, I wasn’t happy at first. I felt that somehow fate had cheated me out of sharing the noble heritage my brothers had. I yearned to be a gallant warrior or leader of men like my brothers. As time went by, I found I had a fairly strong natural talent for magic. The dusty books and tomes of the school opened my eyes to a new world of wonders that I could never have imagined. Finally I began to see a place for myself in the world, a way for me to stand proud with my family. Sadly, those days were far to few. On the day of my graduation, I wandered down to one of the lower level laboratories. The kind of place few people went of their own accord. A fellow classmate had stolen my spellbook and hidden it somewhere in the lower catacombs in a petty attempt at revenge after I was selected by a particularly beautiful archmage to be her apprentice. If I could not recover the book by the time the graduation ceremony took place, I would not graduate. A wizard’s spellbook was his life. Without it, a mage was nothing. Losing your spellbook was the worst infraction a student could make. I would lose my apprenticeship and everything I had worked for. As I wandered the damp corridors, dark, rhythmic chanting echoed at the very edge of my hearing. The chanting wormed its way inside of my head, throbbing and pulsing, speaking to that dark twisted place that lives inside my mind. The rest of the students and faculty were preparing for the evening’s ceremonies. No one should have been down there. At this point, I should have just swallowed my pride and found a sympathetic wizard to help divine the location of my book. But then, my tale wouldn’t be nearly as interesting. No, like every headstrong youth, I believed I was both invincible and feared the japes and jears of my peers should I return without my book. Besides, something about the chanting was attractive. It pulled at me, promising things. It promised power, strength, respect...all the things I craved. When I finally reached the source of chant, it had become so loud I could think of nothing else but the words of power echoing in my mind. I opened the door of the lab and was horrified by what I saw. One of the faculty I recognized was standing in front of an old stone altar. Deep channels were carved into the side of it, stained a deep crimson with what I can only assume was blood. In the mage’s hand was a curved bone dagger that he waved through the air as he chanted. On stone was one of my classmates, a young common girl that I barely knew. Her eyes were vacant, as if stunned by some kind of spell or drug. As I stood there, the mage reached the end of his incantation. “I summon thee, Abraxas Abraxas Abraxas. Accept my sacrifice and grant me power!” Summoning demons was expressly forbidden, let alone dark magic involving human sacrifice. As my brain processed what was happening, time seemed to slow down. The floor cracked and split violently as a swirling vortex spilled out over the floor like a hurricane. The form of the demon crawled from depths of the portal, pulling itself into the material realm as the wizard’s dagger slowly plunged toward the girl’s chest. I could sense the beasts hunger. At that moment, I did the second stupidest thing I have ever done. I yelled “Stop.” Time completely stopped. The mage’s dagger hung in mid air, a look of euphoric glee locked on his face like some kind of twisted reveler. The demon turned slowly and looked into me. It made a horrible sound, like bones breaking. I realized it was laughing at me. Then, it spoke. “Why should I stop mageling. Your elder here has offered me a tasty morsel on a plater. All he asks in return is more power. It never ceases to amaze me how willing mortals are to trade what is eternal for that which is fleeting.” I thought quickly, or possibly slowly, it was hard to tell how long we stood there. I could never hope to defeat the mage or the demon on my own. If it weren’t for the strange time loop the demon seemed to have us in, the girl’s blood would already be staining the alter. It was then that proceeded to do the absolute stupidest thing I had ever done. I decided to try and bluff a demon. I planted my feet and spoke in the most patriarchal voice I could manage. “I am no mageling demon! I am a wizard! My power is known throughout the multiverse. I wish to enter a bargain with you, in exchange for destroying that mage and leaving the girl unharmed, I offer you my soul. Surely the soul of an archmage is worth more then some common girl.” Again, the voice of cracking bones echoed through the hall. I felt my heart sink. I had failed. I’m not sure what I had thought to accomplish. Then, the demon stopped. Demons thrive on pure chaos. The suggestion of destroying the one who had summoned it must have appealed to it, for suddenly the demon responded. “Agreed” Time snapped back into place like a bowstring. The dagger struck the stone altar and shattered. The girl was no longer there. She was lying safely in the corner of the room. The wizard had a moment to look confused before the demon crushed his skull with one meaty claw. Without even glancing my way, the demon slid back through the portal. He left me with one last portent. “When your soul leaves this realm of flesh and bone, I will return to claim what is mine.” As the portal snapped shut, nothing remained in the laboratory to suggest anything out of the ordinary had happened. Well, expect the headless wizard of course. That proved to be rather problematic. When the faculty learned of what had happened, and what I had done to stop the sacrifice, I was immediately shackled and thrown in the dungeon to await execution. The school has a rather non-nonsense approach to dealing with those that consort with demons. If it weren’t for the young girls testimony on my behalf, I’d be as headless as the mage I had stopped. The sentence of execution was commuted to banishment. My family disowned me. My father was ashamed and could not risk it be known that his family harbored a demon worshipper. My spellbook was burned and I was driven out of the city with a small pouch of gold I had saved and the robe on my back. I have but one option left open to me. On the road I have heard some travellers speak of the Stonefist Academy. A place of learning. A place where I could find a new beginning. I knew I wouldn’t make it long on my own. Even if I did, I needed to find a way to get my soul back, otherwise when I died I would be doomed to spend eternity in the Abyss. Sometimes, I can hear the voice of the demon laughing and taunting me. It urges me to further temptation. I must find a way to save my soul.Perhaps Stonefist Academy held the answers I saught. During my trek to the Academy I have slowly been able to piece together a new spellbook. A favor for a hedgewizard here, a village witch there have earned me a few moldier spell scrolls. By the time I reached the Academy, I at least had a few cantrips and minor spells. They would have to do.
