Back in Carodan It is the last days of Harvest, and the warm summer air holds the hint of the coming chill. The harvest has been a good one, and the road is filled with carts bringing stockpiles of grain to Carodan. Carodan stands defiantly against the wildlands as workers swarm over it, reinforcing its defenses of stone and wood. There is a steady stream of soldiers and militia coming and going. There are Warden Ricsten's and House Hulvan's troops, Dwarven troops from the Diamond Mountains, Elven troops from the Severin Forest, and occasionally a band of mounted warriors led by a Knight of Shillen. There are also mercenaries and militia of all sorts. Lagren shouts out a greeting as the heroes enter the Slashing Sword. Wealthier now, and loaded down with loot, the party gets private rooms and guarded stabling. The more expensive, better-quality food and drink is very good, certainly worth it. Looking around, there is no sign of the agents of House Dharnan you saw earlier. Manzanita and Rowyn go to the Warden's residence, and finds long lines of soldiers and mercenaries waiting to see him. Most of those waiting in line are bloodied bounty hunters, carrying proof of their kills to show the Warden. Every now and then a scout arrives and is ushered in ahead of everyone else. Unfortunately, Manzanita and Rowyn are unable to convince the guards that they are anything other than bounty hunters, like the others in line. Having arrived late in the afternoon, Manzanita and Rowyn are not able to see the Warden today, but their names are higher on the list for tomorrow. Meanwhile the others have sorted through all of the loot. Dunathar searches the large box, disarms a trap and picks the lock. The box is filled with gold. Combined with the proceeds from the captured weapons, armor, carts, and horses, and after subtracting expenses for staying at the inn, the party has a combined 8,120 gp. Additionally, there is a heavy steel shield (faint abjuration). Manzanita and Rowyn return to a serious discussion among the group. It's clear that war is again on the horizon. Recent reports tell of Gorukan armies beginning to move slowly through the northern wilderness towards Carodan, and all of Carodan is nervous and fearful. Dunathar talks of taking his share and returning to his clan with the respect that wealth brings. Adromon speaks of signing up with Warden Ricsten's army, possibly taking command of a platoon. Devan speaks of pursuing Shadow, who was last spotted right here, in Carodan. Alyssa says nothing, but she has a far away look in her eyes. Filbert wonders if it might not be wise to join up with the local temple of Fharlanghn, and help them as best he can. No final decisions are made, and the party retires to their rooms for the night. In her room, Rowyn sees the sack of journals she had taken from the cleric, and lighting a lantern, begins to read through them.
