Stormwrack Question

I am looking at the voyages section of stormwrack, preparing for possible sea travel on the part of the PCs in tomorrow's game, and I cannot find where it describes how to determine if a journey is "close" or "distant".

Under knowledge (geography) (p.86) it says that distance off-course is determined based on this, but doesn't explain how to determine how close is close or how distant is distant. . .

Wow. 37 people have looked at this thread and no one knows the answer?

I guess for now I will just make an arbitrary decision regarding what is close and what is distant based on what the supposed common routes are in my setting. . .
