Story Hour Reviews?

Are there any reviews of the threads in Story Hour?

Would this be the right forum for them to be in?

My personal experience has been that the stories with the largest numbers of views were very good, but after the top 3 or 4 this didn't hold up.
And I randomly read a newish story with a low number of views which was excellent.

Reviews can be very personal, and perhaps no reviews at all are better than bad reviews.

I know vBulletin allows people to rate threads, so it's easily possible to rate story-hours; it's just a question of a feature being enabled or not.

The problem with rating story hours is that the authors of those without high ratings could get discouraged and give up. Everyone becomes a better writer through writing; I'd rather encourage them than discourage them. :)

Well, if you're looking for recommendations, one thing to do would be to run a search in general, off-topic, or the story hour forum for threads of people asking what story hour they should read.

I think Eric Noah started a story hour pimping thread in General a while back which might help a bit. There's also the story hour authors chat transcript, which will at least tell you which threads other authors are reading.

View counts can tell you something, but not everything. A thread with 110 posts and 220 views probably isn't being widely read, but that's not to say it won't be your cup of tea. Or maybe it's so stunningly good that everyone who reads it feels compelled to post.

Pimp the Story Hours you like. Or just post cheerleading comments in the thread itself. Ignore the ones you don't.

As a Story Hour writer, I don't WANT people writing reviews of my work. If you feel like you've got some constructive criticism, feel free to email me or put it in the thread, but I don't see how "warning" people to stay out of one Story Hour or another is of any value whatsoever.

If Story Hours were ranked, I don't think I'd continue to contribute. I'm not trying to win a popularity contest -- I'm just telling stories and hoping somebody's listening. When a reader posts a compliment in one of my threads it totally makes my day. If I had to stare at a "three out of four stars" rating I'd just feel like a loser compared to those "four out of four" thread writers. Even IF I were getting as many compliments as I am now.

Encourage the ones you like. Ignore the ones you don't. Everybody wins.

And every now and then, try one you haven't before. I mean, what's the big deal if you try one and it's not your thing? You stop reading. Big deal.

Great advice. I and a few other crazies read a couple of episode of every story hour. Some I keep up with as soon as they are updated, but the majority I read huge chunks of every few weeks. The ones you read that are only a few posts into their incarnation that show hope deserve your praise. I make it a point to try and encourage new story hour writers that I like, because praise really is one of the greatest rewards for story hour authors.

However, at all costs avoid Wild Stewardess Action!
