Strange new idea for a web-enhanced campaign

I was glancing through my new copy of the EQ GMG when I got this idea. For those of you who have seen .hack//sign, you'll know what I'm talking about, since the idea parrallels that (actually, was somewhat ripped from it...).
Basically, someone sets up a messageboard where gameworld news from the players is posted up, including quests, bounties, and such. Include a 'mail service' (possibly as simple as a PM system, but maybe have people make a new account for the game), and you've got the OOG part of it. Use the information on the boards to run a P&P MMORPGesque campaign where something strange is happening (again, a la .hack).
So, what do you guys think of this admittedly odd idea? Feasible? Fun? Too wierd to contemplate?
I eagerly await replies.

Sounds like it would be very useful. Try doing a Google search by "Campaign Site" and you'll see some variations on the idea, I think.

'S not a bad idea. You could even use it for a 'greater campaign world', i.e., multiple DMs/Narrators post the outcome of their group's adventures, maps, descriptions of NPC's & locations so it all links up into a complete world. Living Homebrew, so to speak.
