Stuck...burned...and doomed

First Post
Hi all, I am in a multi-DM group so we stick plainly to how the rules are written to avoid further discussions. I found no answers to my search on these questions so I decided to post it here. Reference would be a great help if there are any. Thanks all in advance.

1) Evard's Black Tentacles and Stinking Cloud
A nauseated creature by the SC is being grappled by the EBT. What would the creature's chance to escape? Can he declare an oppose grapple check during the caster's turn since he can only use a move action during his turn? Is the creature considered to be nauseated completely as long as he does not leave the area?

2) Wall of Fire and BIIIGGG creatures
WoF covers a series of squares that any creature passing through it would suffer damage, my question is: Would it follow the ruling that any square you walked on, you would suffer its effects? Spells like Grease, EBT, Web has saves that negates their effects but slows the movement of everyone within it. Since WoF has no save what will be its effect? Does big creatures gets the big ouch?
(See post #5 for additional details)

3) Doomtide (Complete Divine page 163)
"Effect: Eight 10 ft cubes extending from the caster's location"?
Line, shapable, or around the spellcaster?
(And yes, we checked the online dictionaries to double check what 'extending' means)

:)

1) He's likely hosed. He can't escape durring his turn, and he can't use someone else's turn to create an action. I might allow him to make an opposed grapple check durring a move action as a penalty (-4 in addition to other penalties for being nauseated?) simply because not allowing him to oppose seems a bit too unfair.

2) Doesn't matter how many squares he's contacting, one is enough, more doesn't do more damage. I might rule that something freaking huge might be able to step over the wall, but it'd have to be significantly bigger (Think us steping over the edge of a wading pool type scale)

3) Don't have the book, so don't know the spell, but, it sounds like it eminates in a line like form (Basicly, fills blocks in the direction the caster was pointing, sort of like a lightning bolt). Basicly, draw a point to point (Center to center) line, and if the line is more than 1/3 into the square, it's filled. Repeat till you run out of 10 ft cubes.

Hi and welcome to the board!

Declaring an opposed grapple check is, IMO, the equivalent of an attack [because you could normally make more than one such attempt if you have more than one attack per turn], and therefore at least a standard action. So, no, as I understand it, you couldn't do that.

The creature is nauseated as long as it is within the stinking cloud and for 1d4+1 rounds thereafter. So, even if the creature can escape the black tentacles somehow, it is still nauseated after leaving the area of effect.

I don't know for sure, but I would handle the cubes as a flexible line. You (a grid intersection of the square the spellcaster stands on) are the point of origin for the spell's effect. Build a line of 8 adjacent 10-foot-cubes. Each two of the 10-foot-cubes must "touch" another at least at a space 5 foot wide, just like a coiling snake.

Y = you (the caster)

XX
XX = 10-foot-cube

oY|XX|XX|oo|oo|oo|oo|oo |oo|
oo|XX|XX|XX|XX|XX|XX|oo|oo|
oo|oo|oo| XX|XX|XX|XX|XX|oo|
oo|oo|oo| oo|oo| oo|oo|XX|XX|
oo|oo|oo| oo|oo| oo|oo|oo|XX|

Kind regards

DMG p. 301
"Nauseated: Nauseated creatures are unable to attack, cast spells, concentrate on spells, or do anything else requiring attention. The only action such a character can take is a single move action per turn."

[PHB p.156]
"You can escape a grapple by winning an opposed grapple check in place of making an attack. You can make an Escape Artist check in place of your grapple check if you so desire, but this requires a standard action."

Initiating any kind of a grapple check requires an attack as part of a standard or a full-round action. While a nauseated character would be able to roll grapple checks to resist being grappled or resist grapple actions, they only have a move action each round as long as they are nauseated and can do nothing else, being too sick to struggle in an effective way.

[PHB p. 298]
"...the wall deals 2d6 points of fire damage +1 point per caster level (maximum +20) to any creature passing through it."

It has nothing do with how many sqaures a creature is passing through it, it deals this much damage to any creature simply "passing" through the wall. A large creature will not take more damage from passing through the wall any more than taking more damage for a fireball because the larger creatures take up more space. It just doesn't work that way.

A rather too brief bit of text. I take it to read more succinctly as: "Eight continuous 10-ft. cubes" and have the text fiurther clarify with "A minimum of one cube must begin adjacent to the caster' square." Being a splat book you're kinda on your own here, no text to really help out with this one but that's how I'd probably recommend somone to read it.

Thanks for the replies... sorry I did not make myself clear on the Wall of Fire and Large+ creatures.

Since Large+ creatures occupies more than one square. A large creature would generally pass through a wall of fire (line) in two moves (squares). Will it suffer an additional effect for every move (square) the creature makes? Or all damage, if the creature has more than enough speed to walk (to-and-fro if possible) within the wall and exit at the same round to be treated as only one?

Add Solid Fog...

Since large+ creatures need a minimum of two moves(squares) per round and solid fog would hinder him to move one square per round, will he takes an additional damage the next round since some part of him is still in the wall? Or will be disregarded since he took damage from the wall a round before?

1. He's screwed.

2. Only spells that state different effects based on size have different effects based on size. So, for example, Wall of Fire would have the same effect, but Slime Wave would be more painful to a bigger creature.

3. I think the "segmented line" suggested above sounds reasonable.
