Stupid Dwarf

Dog Moon

Adventurer
Okay, my Dwarf has an Intelligence of 5 [Not my choice, we rolled in order and the 5 landed on Int]. If it matters, my Wis is 16 and my Cha 15. I know there was a Dragon mag discussing this a while ago, but I have no idea what Dragon its in, if I even have it. So I was wondering, how well can I communicate. The PHB says I am as intelligent as an Otyugh, Griffin, and Displacer Beast. I have never had to play a character with such low Intelligence and am trying to figure out how to best roleplay him. I'm also trying to figure out how much the high Wis and Cha affects my character.

So, I'm looking for helping or pointage to previous help of different people with a similar problem. Thx much. :)

Well, back in the old days an Int of 5 would have been considered the equivalent of an IQ of 50. If you are familiar with the "Get Fuzzy" comic strip, think Satchel.

"Satchel the Dwarf" has a nice ring to it....

Gotta say, if I were the DM, I don't think I would've held you to that roll.

Actually, it's gonna be in the low seventies somewhere. It's a bit less than two standard deviations away from mean. That's classified as "Borderline Mental Functioning". Remember that an average 6x3d6 roll results in 6, 8, 10, 11, 13, 15.

In fact, an Int 5 is probably closer to IQ 60 (Mild Retardation) than IQ 50 (Moderate Retardation).

50 might even be represented best by a score of 2.

Of course, the D&D ability system tends to break at scores that low. If a 3-18 range represents the typical human range, then there's just too much space for 1 and 2 to cover, in any ability category.

Stupid Dwarf meet Dumb Bear, Dumb Bear, meet Stupid Dwarf....

Follow the Maissen SH in my sig, and you'll soon come to know the Iconic INT 5 Elf (played by edge3343). He'll be appearing fulltime in the next update.

Just roll with it and have a ball. Playing an INT that low gives you a lot of room to play. But for starters, remember that with an INT of 5 he can probably only speak Dwarven, and even that not very well.

The big dede in the green mile is around 5 I think.

You can play is alingnment to the extreme, if he's good he whant to help every body without tinking.

It's the same Dragon that talks about Dragons. It has previews of the Draconomicon and Draconic language... I wanna say it's #300.

Well, I"m pretty sure, at least.

You could try for an absolutely simple-minded guy that always says the right thing, uncomprehendingly.

What'll we do with the evil necromancer that'll sate the crowds?

Dwarf:(Grinning) Stocks and tomatoes! Har har har! Throwing!

He could be a mascot for the party.

You could think of him as being a little ferral, or increadibly simple while still being highly aware and forcefull. Abstact thought would excape him, but he could be really good at handeling simple concepts, and not just be retarded.
