Subrace or new Race in homebrew setting?

My homebrew setting uses just three races at the start. There will be others later, but for now just humans (variant), halflings and something I've been calling goliaths, but they kind of aren't and are.

Both the halflings and goliaths are stat-ed as if they are fully independent races, but would it make more sense to have them as subraces for both familiarity and ease of combination within the greater 5th edition rule-set?

So may similar but not same goliaths could be Goliath (Crinthian) with only a few modifiers from the UA that had the 5th edition build?

Or should I rip the goliath name from them (they are Large rather than Medium as the major difference). They are also generally peaceful, wise but stupid.

Depends on your group and how you want to interest players in the races.

I think generally speaking that if the standard version of the race does not exist, or is not playable in your game, then the homebrew version is essentially the only one that matters and may as well be the playable race.

I guess by going with a subrace it would reduce my additive material needs. With 5th being fairly lean (especially if you ignore spells) how robust of a "How Dave's world works" paper do I want
