Sucker Punch: An Example of Mixed Genre in Action (No Spoilers)

Saw the movie last night and couldn't help but think it's a great example of how a GM could mix different genres together in a RPG and have it believable. Whether you've seen the movie or not the premise, which is how the movie is presented, is that everything we're seeing is mainly from one character's point of view (although it's a crazed mind perspective) which is awesome. It allows for so much stretching of standard boundaries that if used in a game a GM could effectively mix any genre into their game and be completely justified since the believability is based on character perspective and not the actual world they live in. I think it also allows the game to become group controlled more since the characters each have a view point which could be explored, allowing each player to take control and run the game as they reveal how their character sees things. It would make for an awesome game system and I'd love to see someone design one along these lines. If not one could easily use BESM, Gurps, or Rifts just focusing on point of view instead of standard game world. Thoughts?

Fate system, like the Dresden Files RPG could probably do this. The Dresden RPG already mixes magic and modern, so stretching it to cover more shouldnt be particularly hard.

Come to think of it, it already takes the point of view into account, since using the surroundings to manipulate the encounter is strongly encouraged.

There are plenty of systems that can do it as the rules are not important to Sucker Punch and all the genres they have. What is important is the dressing and the killing. also, the girls were never much different genre to genre they still had guns and swords and all of that no matter what they were facing.

I forgot about Fate. I would have to agree that it would be a good fit.

While correct, I was pointing out the method of presenting mixed genres, which the movie does well with the mix of modern and fantasy.

I'd have to point out that it's pretty easy to do whatever you want to, if it's not ACTUALLY "happening", within the rules of your own movie ... I'd have been more impressed if this were not the case.

I can't play "pure fantasy" anymore. Everything I run is mixed genre.

I ran a very effective Matrix-style game using d20 Modern, Arcana, Future, and Fantasy rules.

Take the movie Inception, add a sprinkling of Shadowrun, and add FATE and I think you'd have a win.

Hmmmm. This sounds pretty awesome now come to think of it.....

Like The Matrix and Inception, Sucker Punch finds a way to mash-up genres without snapping the willing suspenders of disbelief.

Simply slapping all of these elements together without first creating the rules of the world by which they work would be far less satisfying, in my opinion.
