Sudden Reach feat

Is this Sudden Reach Metamagic feat balanced?

Sudden Reach [Metamagic]
You can cast touch spells as a ray without special preparation.
Prerequisite: Any metamagic feat.
Benefit: Once per day, you can apply the effect of the Reach Spell feat to any spell you cast without increasing the level of the spell or specially preparing it ahead of time. You can still use Reach Spell normally if you have it.

It looks fine enough to me, even though I am a bit baffled why the requirement is "Any metamagic feat" instead of Reach Spell. And why not make the feat apply to any spell with a certain spell level increase, instead of opening up for the potential of having "Sudden Extend", "Sudden Heighten", "Sudden Maximise" etc. That would make the feat far more open-ended, if it could simply apply to any metamagic feat the caster knows with a maximum spell level increase.

The "Sudden" feats already exist. Sudden Extend, Sudden Maximize, etc. Not sure where they first appeared, but they're in Complete Arcane. And most of them don't require the non-sudden version of the feat; they're replacements, not enhancements.

I'm fine with the Sudden Reach feat as the OP presented it, and in fact I've been using the exact same thing in my own campaigns.

Ahh, don't have Complete Arcane, so I wasn't aware of the existing feats. And when I think about it, its a worthwhile replacement, especially for a lower level caster that doesn't have the metamagic feat that the Sudden feat is derived from (or doesn't have high enough spell levels to apply it to anything worthwhile).

Thanks Mouseferatu! Good to hear I can do something right (sometimes)!

Clay_More, I built it around the other Sudden feats from Complete Arcane. Since the Reach Spell feat comes from Complete Divine, I wanted to complete the set.

Cheers
