Suggestions for non-naval encounters

My player... out!

I've got a low-level bard PC that's the new captain of a ship... a hold full of cargo liberated from smugglers... an unreliable crew... what challenges would you throw at the PC? Special emphasis on non-combat challenges would be appreciated.

did you want non-naval or non-combat?

why does the crew accept the bard as captain? could they mutiny or go on strike demanding a greater share of the loot? are they poor sailors who sail into area full of jagged coral reefs

have the navy stop and search ships looking smugglers, lots of options, stop/flee or bluff/bribe/fight

They get lost? Sick?

Today begins the epic tale of Bard vs. Scurvy!

Also, use these in combination maybe. The bard must find a fence for the smuggled goods, but he's got sick crewmen, and has to somehow get the goods out of quarantine afore the authorities find it, or bardy's goin' to jail. Additionally the smuggled goodies contains a whosit that's much worse than any of the other contraband...

Storms, entering an area of sharp shallow reefs, rats in the galley stores, fishing for sharks/marlin/sea serpents, negotiating passage through Aquatic Elf controlled territory, siren song

Sorry. Good clarification question. I've got the combat section planned out: exploring a derelict. I'm looking for skill, sailing, social, and environment challenges.

If it helps, the PC's the one who posted about goblin sailors.... http://www.enworld.org/showthread.php?t=204059
