summon monster 0 and summon monster other stuff

okay, I'm thinking about making a guy that summons stuff and I figured a summon monster 0 would be cool even if it only lets you summon a dove or frog or something, has anything thought of something like that before.

and on the the other stuff:
Has anyone come up with a way to summon other monsters besides the ones labeled in the tables, or should the GM just kind of rule it based on the creature?

IMC, Summon Monster spells are for a specific extraplanar creature that the spellcaster has encountered and entered into an agreement with. There's no "summon monster I", but there is "Summon Bloodfuzz the fiendish jackal".

I rate the spell-level required at either 1/2 CR or 1/2 ECL. No PC summoners, so I don't use the rules very often. (I'm contemplating adding a "summon level" entry to the monsters, but that's a bit more work that I feel the need to urgently do.)

Pull a rabbit out of your hat.

Actually, I'm serious. I played in a somewhat brief Warhammer campaign, where I was an apprentice wizard-type. I had only two spells, one of which was the ability to summon rabbits out of thin air. It was really funny; the bad guy couldn't understand why I kept handing him rabbits.

Anyway, in D&D terms, it should only summon a harmless creature, utterly useless in combat (except to distract a monster?) Any creature that can be a Familiar for a starting Wizard is probably fair game. Remember that it'd only last 1 round per level, so it's not likely to be much use.
