I'm back again (conference finished...) and have a bit more time for RPG ;) Well, yes, and I agree. But I think that there's a general problem in balancing spells (I hope that 3.5 will fix it or give hints to balance spells)...The summon monster spells (especially SM IX) and Gate have one important difference: a monster from SM IX is under full control of the caster, it will perform any tasks commanded and won't die in combat, while Gate calls one or more monsters that will accomplish one task (fight, heal, cast a spell) or stay longer if properly paid. Gate also creates a portal for planar travel which is very useful under some circumstances. Hmm, if the wizard wants to cast three level 3 spells (3.5 monsters per casting...;)) to get a CSW, ok, why not? A cleric would still do better with one spell of the same level or three first level spells (CLW). Fine versatile summoning list, green slime. CR seems to be ok overall, but I'd move the Lammasu from level 9 to 7 or 8 perhaps. Hmm, just a thought: Why not making a standard list from which a wizard or cleric can choose a monster, but that list can become longer with each new monster the caster has enountered later? E.g., a wizard and his buddies (all level 12) fight some girallons (CR 6), creatures they've never seen before. After the fight, the wizard could add this monster to his personal list for SM VI. This would be more PC personal, as Cyraneth pointed out. The list should be CR based as has already been worked out. Ok, agreed for the water creatures ;). As I said, I've made bad experiences as a DM as well as a player with flying spell casting creatures and their CR (especially wizards who are completely out of CR rules in higher levels, but that's a different matter...)
