Ok...after reading many posts and discussing with others, I am going to start with the following for including Summoning in my game. In a way, I'm going to make a Summoner like a multi-class option for Wizards, Warlocks and Clerics. This way, I can build both Summoners and Necromancers.
I like this idea because it makes it easy to implement and it takes less work for me as DM - No messy homebrew class.
The number one criticsm against summoning is that it takes away from economy of action so I tried to address that, but I have to admit, I don't mind giving spellcasters a little more power/ prestige in my own game.
Another important point was the idea that any summoned creature would be very powerful even if it could occupy an opponent for 1 or more rounds. It would help set up flanking opportunities and it could absorb hits that otherwise may have landed on PCs. I also tried to address this concern.
Feel free to comment or use as you like.
Cheers.
