Superman: Still Awesome

In a movie. The Luthor from Smallville is the one I think nailed the character the best. From what I understand, though, the movie Luthor was based on the one from Smallville.
It’s a difficult one. Rosenbaum is excellent as young conflicted Luthor, the one who is still Clark’s friend but gradually makes more and more choices that make him a ruthless villain, but IMO he’s not very good as the finished product, and his having been a major part of Clark’s life makes their relationship very different.

My personal favourite version of Luthor is Clancy Brown, but of course he’s animated.

Hoult does a brilliant version of Luthor at the beginning of his villainous career - incredibly talented and resourceful but not yet having gained the calm and patience that come from experience, and unable to conceal the childish petty envy and hatred that are the core of his character. He’s most based (from what I’ve read) on the Grant Morrison comics version of Luthor, who is a little older and wiser but still very much the same man at heart.

Cavill was excellent, but the tone of Snyder's vision was very dark; it was like watching "Justice League: Seattle in the 1990s". I still enjoyed them, but it was an aberration from the way Superman stories are normally told. Gunn's Superman was much truer to the hopefulness I have always found in Superman. Plus, it was just a fun, fun superhero movie. Loved it.

I liked Jesse Eisenberg in Dawn of Justice. I definitely felt his character was great for a villain, I'm just not sure it was Luthor. I think they found the right one in Hoult. If they stick with him, I hope he and the character can grow and mature as the series goes on.

Some people have said that they could accept Eisenberg's character as Lex Jr., but not as Lex. I can see that.
